TheCity Walls
The City Walls of Londonderry are not just a historic monument; they are the very soul of the city. Built between 1613 and 1618 by the Honourable The Irish Society, these walls are among the best-preserved in Europe and have never been breached, leading to the city's famous moniker, "The Maiden City." Walking the full 1.5-kilometer circuit is an essential experience for any visitor, offering a unique pedestrian route that provides unparalleled views into the historic city within and the modern city beyond.
The walls are a bastion fortification, featuring 24 original cannons and several historic gates, each with its own story. Key highlights along the walk include the grand Cathedral of St. Columb, the imposing Walker's Plinth commemorating the Governor during the Siege, and the double-height bastions that project outwards. Informative plaques are placed throughout, detailing the significance of each section. The walk is a physical journey through history, from the 17th century to the present day, and stands as a powerful symbol of the city's resilience and enduring spirit.
