Eglinton
Eglinton is a small village located just east of the City of Derry, effectively acting as a suburb for the city but retaining its own distinct identity. Its development was heavily influenced by its proximity to the City of Derry Airport, which is situated within the village boundaries, making it a key transport hub for the entire northwest region. Despite this modern role, the village has a long history, originally growing around a crossing point on the River Faughan. The old core of the village features some historic buildings, including the old church and school.
The village offers a range of amenities for its residents, including shops, schools, and sports facilities. Its location provides the best of both worlds: easy access to the employment, culture, and amenities of Derry~Londonderry, while maintaining a quieter, village atmosphere. The surrounding area is flat and agricultural, with the river providing a natural corridor for wildlife. For travellers, Eglinton is most often encountered as the location of the regional airport, but it is also a thriving and convenient community in its own right.
