PeaceBridge
The Peace Bridge is more than just a means to cross the River Foyle; it is a powerful symbol of unity and reconciliation in Londonderry NI. Opened in 2011, this elegant, S-shaped cycle and footbridge was designed to physically and metaphorically link the two sides of the city—the largely unionist Waterside with the predominantly nationalist Cityside—communities that were once deeply divided. Its design, a collaborative effort between architects in Northern Ireland and the Republic, was intended to represent the coming together of different traditions.
The bridge has quickly become an iconic landmark and a beloved part of the cityscape. Its graceful curve makes for a beautiful walk or cycle, offering ever-changing perspectives of the Guildhall, the hills beyond, and the city walls. It connects the Ebrington Square site, a former British army barracks now transformed into a vibrant cultural space, to the heart of the city centre. Illuminated at night, the bridge becomes a stunning visual spectacle. It stands as a testament to the city's forward-looking spirit and is a must-visit attraction that embodies hope and a shared future.
