EbrintonBarracks
The site of Ebrinton Barracks, now known as Ebrington Square, represents one of Londonderry's most successful transformations from a symbol of conflict to a beacon of peace and community. Originally a military barracks for the British Army, the site was heavily fortified and closed off to the public for centuries, a physical manifestation of the division in the city. Its strategic location on the Waterside, overlooking the River Foyle, made it a key military asset. Following the demilitarization process, the site was handed over to the community in the early 2000s.
Today, the former parade ground has been reimagined as a magnificent public square, hosting major events, concerts, and cultural festivals. The historic barracks buildings are being sensitively redeveloped into hotels, restaurants, and creative spaces. The site is directly linked to the city centre by the Peace Bridge, making it an integral part of the city's cultural corridor. Ebrington Square stands as a powerful example of positive change, where a place once associated with tension is now a vibrant, open space for everyone to enjoy, symbolizing the city's journey towards a shared and peaceful future.
